Mail Protection

What You Can Do
  • Mail checks from a safe location (Post Office or a locked box) instead of leaving it in your mailbox for pickup, especially overnight with the red flag up.
  • Thieves steal checks right from mailboxes.
  • Purchase a mail box that locks, or a post office box, to protect new incoming credit cards or boxes of checks from your bank (or, have your checks mailed to your bank).  Also, retrieve your mail as soon as itís dropped off.
  • Mail your tax forms at the post officeódonít leave them in your mailbox where they could be stolen.  Also, the IRS will not call or email you for private information.
  • Opt-out of receiving mailed solicitations by calling 888-5-OPTOUT.  You will be asked by a recorded message to provide, among other information, your Social Security number, as a means to identify you.  This service is secure, according to The Wall Street Journal Complete Identity Theft Guidebook:  How to Protect Yourself from the Most Pervasive Crime in America, by Terri Cullen.
  • Consider communicating with your financial institution online, rather than receiving statements in the mail.
