The Center prevents children from witnessing potentially traumatic courtroom proceedings.
The goal of the Children's Waiting Room program is to protect children from witnessing the upsetting courtroom events and reliving the traumatic home experience, as well as to empower victims of abuse with children to seek remedies to ensure their safety and the safety of their children.
The Center offers a high quality, state-licensed child care facility for children ages 1 to 12 whose parents/guardians are conducting court-related business at the Spokane County Courthouse. Children are offered a safe, fun, and nurturing environment staffed by Early Childhood Educators. Objectives related to this goal include:
1. providing a safe, nurturing, non-violent environment to 1,000 children per year whose parents are attending to court matters Programs:
2. providing fun and educational activities that encourage children to forget about their anxiety and fear
3. providing one-on-one care for anxious children by volunteers and staff
4. creating community awareness about the program and services available
They main a full resource library of materials, as well as education on family violence through written material and presentations. Reservations are not required
; however, parents are encouraged to call in advance. This is a FREE service.
Priority is given to cases involving domestic violence. It is closed during the lunch hour.
