Western Governors University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine (One of two medical schools in Spokane)
Accepting 60 students in the fall of 2017. Each course will be taught by an interdisciplinary team of physicians and scientists. Medical students will spend their first 2 years doing academic work in Spokane before they are assigned to clinical training at the university's campuses in Spokane, the Tri-Cities, Vancouver and Everett.
The college's approach to medicine places a premium on developing skills to work in teams to provide care in Washington's underserved areas. Courses are aimed at thriving in rural areas: teamwork, leadership and telemedicine.
The Washington State Dept. of Health reports that 20% of Americans live in rural areas, but only 9% of the nation's doctors practice in rural areas. (2017) Student applicants need to show 3 of 4 possible ties: birth in Washington, a current parent resident, proof of living in the state during childhood, or graduation from a Washington high school.
